A writing workspace with AI tools
Authors AI brings notes, editing, source research and publishing into one application. Writers develop a draft, ask AI for assistance and prepare their work for readers. The Creator plan adds research tools, graphics and quota management.

The challenge — Build a writing platform with an editor and AI tools
The platform needed to support the full journey from a note to a published piece. The scope included an editor, a material library, research tools, an AI assistant and reader discussions. A separate part was the paid Creator plan, with model selection, quotas, request history and a financial account. These features had to work together across the interface, backend and data model, from saving a draft to checking subscription access to a tool.
My contribution — Built the complete platform from scratch
I built Authors AI from scratch: the database, APIs, backend and interfaces. I implemented the writing workspace, editor, publishing and reviews, and integrated AI tools for text, research and graphics. For Creator, I developed subscriptions, quota tracking, result history and account operations. The application also includes mobile workflows, profile management and security settings.
- Writing workspace
- Built the notepad, material library and editor for the different stages of writing. Drafts and published work share a searchable list with status filters.
- AI in the editor
- Integrated proofreading, passage improvement, title suggestions and summarizing into the editor. The writer chooses an action and decides how to use its result.
- Research and sources
- Integrated scientific and patent search, original-source lookup and technical synthesis into Creator. Writers can choose the research mode and source scope.
- Illustrations and infographics
- Built tools for illustration briefs and structured infographic data. Writers set the format and content alongside their material.
- Subscription and quotas
- Implemented subscriptions, quota tracking and an overview of remaining usage by tool category. Renewal and extra packs have a dedicated management page.
- Publishing and feedback
- Built the topic-based feed and reviews linked to exact quotations, keeping the author’s reply and subsequent discussion connected to the text.
From the first note to publication
Develop an idea into a complete piece
Writing can begin with a short note that saves automatically on the device. The material editor provides headings, lists, formatting and AI commands. The library remains close by, with search and status filters for returning to drafts or published work. Reviews have a separate workspace that keeps the original material visible while the reader prepares a response.
Plan research and trace sources
Creator lets writers choose scientific search, patents, original-source lookup or technical synthesis. The query and source scope are separate, allowing international searches or a broader selection. Model settings for text and graphics are available here too. Research tools show the remaining quota and the terms for additional usage.
Prepare graphics and reuse earlier results
An illustration begins with a description of the image. For an infographic, writers choose a visual format, add a title and enter data: bars, shares, a timeline, a diagram or a comparison. These tools sit alongside the editor. AI history keeps previous results available so they can be reused without making another request.
Publish and discuss the work
Published materials appear in a feed with sections, topics and sorting. Readers can open the full piece and write a review linked to a specific passage. The author sees the feedback in context, replies and continues the discussion beneath the material. Review tools can help with structure, softer wording or checking a response for contradictions with the original text.
Manage the Creator plan
The Creator workspace brings subscription status, the selected AI model and remaining quotas together. Usage is grouped by text, graphics and research tools. The subscription page shows its term, automatic renewal and the next charge. When a particular allowance is insufficient, writers can choose an extra pack for that tool.
Keep track of the account and profile
The account shows the balance, funds available for withdrawal and account activity. Users can add funds or support another author. The transaction log can be filtered by type, status and date, then exported. Profile settings bring together identity, activity and security controls, including email and password changes and two-factor authentication.
Editing, AI and publishing in one application
Authors AI uses React and TypeScript for its interface. TipTap handles document structure and formatting, while Zustand manages workspace state. Fastify serves the API, and Prisma connects the backend to PostgreSQL. Materials, reviews, AI history and subscription records are stored on the server; the simple notepad saves locally on the device. AI tools call providers through the backend, where access and quota usage are accounted for.
